The Englishman Will Ospreay defeated Kot Ibushi and ascended the wrestling throne. That happened shortly after the introduction of the new top title in the Japanese league NJPW. The second-largest wrestling league in the world caused a sensation with the surprising outcome. With the victory of Ospreay, the top English wrestler overthrew the clear favourite Kot Ibushi and won the IWGP World Heavyweight title. The Englishman was crowned champion for the first time.
It happened because he could bring his opponent to his knees with his special attacks in a high-class match. Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker were critical to its success. His victory came as a big surprise. After all, Kot Ibushi had only been victorious in January. He won the IWGP Heavyweight and the Intercontinental Title. Ospreay only got a title match by winning the New Japan Cup. But he took his chance and is now surprisingly the new number 1.
Make 1 Out Of 2
The league has seen a fundamental change. The promotors crushed two previous titles in the familiar form. Instead, there is a new title. Ibushi himself was at the centre of the action for a long time and pushed this innovation. That he is now the first victim is the irony of history. That is all the more surprising as the new champions’ ascent was rapid. Will Ospreay has made a quick way to the top. He had already drawn attention to himself in the past with a spectacular highflying. A year ago, he was still performing in the junior heavyweight division. But during the past eight months, the Englishman has been working hard on himself. He gained significantly in muscle mass and rose to the heavyweight class. In the course of the G1 Climax tournament, he got back into the NJPW.
Fast Climb To The Top
Then he separated from his mentor and founded the United Empire. First, he suffered a loss to Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 15 in January. Experts consider him to be the best wrestler in the world. Nevertheless, Ospreay is trusted to be his successor. After his defeat, everybody thought that the Englishman would not advance to the top anytime soon. But he proved his critics wrong, so the surprise at his unexpected success is all the more significant. Shingo Tagaki, in particular, felt this. That was inferior to Ospreay in the final of the New Japan Cup. He called for a title match. However, Ospreay himself would like to compete again against his former mentor.
The megastar of the Liga Kazuchika Okada is still above him; he wants to defeat him. At the presentation of the new IWGP World Heavyweight title, NJPW announced that there would also be a new title for the weekly show NJPW Strong in the future. That takes place on American soil and is broadcast on the streaming channel NJPW World. Former WWE wrestlers like Fred Rosser and Lio Rush also fight there.
